Salamoa Radio (VJQ) |
| Salamoa
Radio was established in 1927 upon the closure of Morobe Radio. Salamoa
is situated in the northeast corner of New Guinea, and was the nearest seaport
to the Bulolo and Edie Creek goldfields. Just after the station opened,
a regular air service was established between Lae and Wau.
The settlement of Salamoa is built on a narrow sand-spit and, in 1927, consisted of only a few native shacks which, by 1932, had been replaced by sawn timber buildings. The local hotel, which had been built by the Salamoa Trading Company in the early years, welcomed resident guests; a change from the days when it had been used by prospectors as a place to drink and brawl. The radio station maintained direct communication with Rabaul, but after a new radio set had been installed at Bulolo in 1928, Salamoa was no longer needed as a relay station between the goldfields and Rabaul. Salamoa Radio was abandoned in the early weeks of 1942, when the area was bombed by the Japanese. |
