Hobart Radio opened on 30 April 1912. The station was built at the base of Mount Wellington in the Queens Domain, high above the Derwent River; its original function was to keep in touch with steamers travelling on coastal runs.

After AWA took over the Coastal Radio Service in 1922, Hobart was partially modernised and its equipment updated, although the station buildings remained the same, apart from some modifications to their internal structure.

During World War II, Hobart Radio was on continuous watch and a further two staff were assigned to the station which also continued to serve as a central communications 'hub' for several outstations.
