Rockhampton Radio station began operating on 24 May 1913. The station was situated 45 kilometres up-river, in the old part of town, and was used mainly to keep in radio contact with larger vessels sailing up the east coast.

In its early days the station was well-known for its involvement in Outpost Radio, keeping outlying communities and cattle stations in touch with civilisation.
