Farewell to Morse

At 23:59utc on January 31st, 1999 the following message was transmitted from Darwinradio:

THIS IS THE FINAL MORSE TRANSMISSION FROM
THE TELSTRA MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK.
WE CONCLUDE OUR FINAL CW WATCH AFTER
87 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS SERVICE WITH PRIDE AND SADNESS.
TELSTRA.

THE AUSTRALIAN MARITIME SAFETY AUTHORITY
AND THE BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY WISH ALL SEAFARERS
FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS.

MARCONI IF YOU CAN HEAR THIS WE SALUTE YOU

If you have a sound card you might be interested in hearing a recording of the original (a 300kb MP3 file) transmitted from Darwinradio on 8487kHz (use the 'open this file from its current location' option after clicking on the link).

With the de-powering of the last transmitter came the end of an important era in telecommunications. An era that spanned nearly a century - a remarkable feat in an industry that now sees major changes in technology every few months.
